Regional workshop on Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) and cross border control in the Lake Chad Basin.

 

Representatives from Lake Chad Basin States and Benin attended the Regional workshop on Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) and cross border control in the Lake Chad Basin.

The Regional Workshop on Weapons and Ammunition Management and Cross Border control in the Lake Chad Basin was held on 13 and 14 December 2023 at UNREC premises in Lomé, Togo. It was the first workshop of the project “Capacity building to prevent the acquisition of Arms and Ammunition by violent extremist/terrorist group in the Lake Chad Basin with the financial support of the Republic of Italy and France.

The opening ceremony of the workshop witnessed the participation of the Representative of the Lake Chad Basin commission (LCBC), the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Togo as well as the Minister of Security and Civil Protection who solemnly opened the workshop.

The Workshop brought together countries member from Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) of Lake Chad Basin namely Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria.

Different partners attended the workshop including the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Laboratoire d’Analyse Régionale et d’Expertise Sociale (LARES), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Institute on Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), the Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT) and Conventional Arms Branch (CAB).The regional Organizations such the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central Africa States (ECCAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) were also part of the event .

Several topics were discussed during the workshop portraying the urgency to align with good practices in weapons and ammunition management using international standards such as the Modular Small Arms Control Implementation Compendium  (MOSAIC) and the International Ammunition Technical Guidelines (IATG) to foster cross border control to deter the illicit flow of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) used by terrorist/extremists’ violent groups. Prevention and joint actions are the sole actions to slow down/stop the progress of the phenomenon and protect population.
