Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
UNREC also addresses the critical issue of WMD proliferation, supporting African states in complying with international non-proliferation frameworks such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC). The Centre works closely with states to enhance legislative and regulatory measures that prevent the production, transfer, and use of WMD and related materials.
Through targeted workshops, UNREC raises awareness of WMD threats and builds national capacities to respond effectively to these challenges. The Centre, supported by UNODA and with its partners provides technical and legal expertise to help states update their national legislation in line with global standards, ensuring that African countries are better equipped to manage and control WMD-related risks. In partnership with regional and international organizations, UNREC promotes dialogue on critical issues such as the safe handling of hazardous materials and the prevention of biological threats, facilitating a coordinated approach to WMD control across the continent.
UNREC’s efforts include facilitating workshops on the Biological Weapons Convention across Africa, which bring together national authorities, international experts, and civil society to discuss best practices and enhance the implementation of the BWC.
