On 7 June 2022, UNREC participated in the UNCT Security Management Team which focused on increased threats to UN Staff and premisses and special recommendations from UNDSS in light of the increased security tension as a result of the recent attacks by extremist groups in several regions of UNREC’s Host Country.

From 30 May to 4 June 2022, UNREC took part in the 53rd Session of the UNSAC Meeting in Yaoundé, Cameroun. The meeting marked the 30th anniversary of the UNSAC which has been acknowledged as a useful preventive diplomacy and confidence building tool and proven effective over the years to mitigate/address tensions and armed conflict among Central African States but also support the incremental maturation of the ECCAS as a subregional body. The UNSAC further expressed appreciation to UNREC/ODA and UNOCA for their crucial support in their respective capacities as Secretariat of the UNSAC over the years.

On 19 and 20 May 2022, UNREC was on mission to Abuja to discuss with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission on ways and means to enhance cooperation and synergies to advance peace, security and arms control in West Africa based on respective strategic plans and comparative advantages. Working sessions were held with the Peacekeeping and Regional Security Directorate of the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security. UNREC also met with the Director of Early Warning to discuss early warning as a means to contribute to peace and security in the region from a human security perspective. The mission team also paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy National Coordinator of the Nigerian Centre for Control of SALW.
